Array CGH and bulk sequencing approaches, which measure average DNA content across millions of cells in a tumor sample, obscure the cell-to-cell variability in chromosome copy numbers and fail to detect individual cell-unique chromosomal aberrations present within the tumor population. Single-cell sequencing is required to reveal the true extent of karyotype heterogeneity. [@bakker_single-cell_2016]
